MVHS Grant Award

LOCAL NON-PROFIT TO RECEIVE GRANT FROM Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Mahoning Valley & Western PA

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO (August 12, 2013)…At 3 p.m. on Monday, August 12 at Mahoning Valley Historical Society in Youngstown board members from Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mahoning Valley & Western Pennsylvania will help local children through a cash grant to the MVHS for the Turning Points American Civil War Summer Camp.

The camp aims to immerse students into the Civil War time period.  The large spaces in the Tyler History Centere will transform into interactive settings of the 1860s.  The camper will no longer see a ballroom or exhibit gallery.  Instead, he or she will envision Ford’s Theatre, a battlefield, Union and Confederate camps, a council of war, Lee’s & Grant’s headquarters, and more.

"We’re excited to be a part of a program which helps give children a much brighter future, and offer the  vital support to this outstanding program that advances Ronald McDonald House Charities’ mission of lifting children to a better tomorrow,” said Herb Washington, RMHC Board President and McDonald's Owner/Operator.

Mahoning Valley Historical Society will receive $1,100 for their Education Department.  The MVHS education staff has developed a unique curriculum to complement the historic settings as well as various Ohio content standards.    From interactive ice-breakers, a mock political campaign, and assuming the identity of a real Mahoning Valley soldier to making hardtack, debating battle strategies and undergoing an age-appropriate and historically accurate exploration of slavery, students will ”live” in the era.
